This is a two-part post. The first part is short:

Last night I ripped out my very first sock-in-progress. I hated working on it. The heel was a disaster. I was using too-small needles. Now I’m free to make other socks, and I feel free.

This is the seventh day of the boiled water advisory in and around Vancouver. It’s a pain in the ass. I got all risky and brushed my teeth at the tap this morning. So far so good with my gastrointestinal tract.

Bottled water has been in the news a lot as a result of our unfortunate reservoir situation. Here at home we’ve managed for a week without buying bottled water, though we did use the 9.5-liter jug we keep around for emergencies – its tap made rinsing dishes and toothbrushes way more convenient. Other than that we’ve been boiling and refrigerating and giving Cleo rainwater (which has been accumulating in great abundance).

So anyway, back to bottled water. People interviewed on tv and radio keep saying they drink bottled water, in general, because it’s healthier for them than tap water. This is, to me, one more example of people believing what they want to believe out of convenience and their choice not to think critically. The tap water in and around Vancouver is the best I’ve ever tasted. It doesn’t, in fact, have a noticeable flavour. People don’t get sick from it. It’s very, very good. Bottled water is ridiculous, beyond the part about it not being “more healthy” than tap water. The plastic bottles need to be produced; the finished product must be trucked all over the country; the amount of waste produced from disposable bottles is enormous. Suck it up people – we live in one of the most livable cities on the planet, and our tap water is top notch. Save your money and the plastic trees.

i went back and skimmed your boston post and i think it’s hilarious that i convinced you to try magic loop when i wasn’t myself convinced yet.

also, i’m with you on tap water. plus i don’t know about in canada but here it’s fluoridated which is so much better for your teeth especially children. the only bottled water i buy is the carbonated kind.
