The PBS web series Off Book produced this short video about being creative, and they did a great job of breaking down so many of the factors that affect creativity. I nodded my head especially hard during the part about sticking with it and doing the work. Which parts resonate with you?

The sticking with it and working part reminds me of Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk on creativity and work: http://www.ted.com/talks/elizabeth_gilbert_on_genius.html
I love that we’re starting to seriously talk about collaboration vs. lone-cowboy stuff. Elizabeth doesn’t talk much about that aspect of it, but she definitely echoes a lot of what Off Book says here about perserverance, etc. And both points of view are needed to counter this almost toxic idea that creativity cannot be developed, so if you aren’t “born with it” you shouldn’t bother…

Thanks for the link, Doug! And yeah, I agree that the “born with it” attitude is truly toxic. Blech.

Thank you for sharing this! As a knitter, I especially appreciated the part about accepting that we are all influenced. So little is truly new or “original”, Keeping things looking fresh is all about remixing elements that are more or less traditional.
