Win a Signed Copy of Crochet Me and Crochet Visual Quick Tips!Karrie over at Knit Purl Girl is doing a weeks-long March Madness knitting- and crochet-themed giveaway, and I’m so happy to be participating as a sponsor. My prize: A signed copy of Crochet Me and a signed copy of Crochet Visual Quick Tips – which, in combination, will keep a crafty person busy for a very long time. Also, I will throw in some surprises.

There are loads of ways to enter the contest, which Karrie outlines on her blog, but one of the ways is to leave a comment on my blog. I hope this means I’ll get to chat with lots of new and familiar people between now and the contest’s end on April 4th! (I hope those conversations will continue long after the contest ends, too.)

So let’s consider this post a contest-related open thread. To help you out if you’re timid about just leaving a random comment, here are some things I’d really like to know. Pick one, and comment away.

  • What’s your absolute favourite thing you’ve ever made by hand? (Link to it, don’t be shy!)
  • When you think of mystery meat, what, exactly, comes to mind?
  • Who taught you how to crochet?
  • Not a crocheter? Will winning this prize nudge you to learn how to crochet?
  • What’s the last movie you saw, and what did you think of it?
  • What are you reading right now?
  • First time here? Tell me anything. What’s your pet’s name? Your favourite teacher’s name? What did you eat for dinner last night? (Got a recipe?)

Be sure to check in with Knit Purl Girl regularly (she’s on Twitter, too) – she’s posting new March Madness contests every day till April 4th!

Best of luck to you!

YAY! I’m learning to crochet – so I’m SO excited that you’re giving away some great crochet prizes on my blog!!

Hey Kim,

Thanks for the contest. I like that you’re trying to connect with your readers. My mom taught me to crochet when I was little, I think around 8. She used to make a lot of modular afghans and I thought it was so cool how all these individual pieces came together to make a larger pattern. Funny thing is, I hate sewing little pieces together, so while I admire my mom’s afghans, I generally only make blankets in a single piece. I am working on one now that is 7-8 strips, that amount of joining I can handle. :)

Hope that’s what you’re looking for.

# What’s your absolute favourite thing you’ve ever made by hand?
The Baby Thing , sort of a blankie/hoodie/bath towel thingy that had its drawstring all along the top edge and through the hoodie’s casing, so it wouldn’t be drawn too tight. Shell pattern, thin to thick cotton yarns, naturally broadening out like a wave to shore. The last one I made, i think, was around 9/11; I needed someone to hope for.

# When you think of mystery meat, what, exactly, comes to mind?
Soy-supplemented meat that doesn’t have the courage to be full-veggie.

# Who taught you how to crochet?
A teacher in an after-school program, with packing twine and electric green acrylic.

Oops — I’d like the Crochet Visual Quick Tips book, since I’ve already got Crochet Me.

I already own “Crochet Me” but I can’t resist answering some of your questions! I’m reading “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver (LOVED “Poisonwood Bible”); recently finished Elizabeth George’s first book “A Great Deliverance” and am looking forward to reading more by her. Learned to crochet on my own from books over the past six months or so, and am enjoying it immensely (heretofore a Knitter only) although I take flack for it from my knitting friends (why?!?)

I learned to crochet as a kid from my grandma and mom. I left it for a while, but have in more recent years gone back to crochet and knitting.

I also saw Black Swan recently and it is a movie that has stayed with me. I think Natalie Portman was amazing in it!

Reading: pillars of the earth by Ken Follett. He makes cathedral building in 1100 England fascinating. 2 thumbs up.
Plus I wanna win the crochet prize. My aunt taught me to crochet when I was 10 or so. I’ve always been crafty – embroidery, macrame, (yes, I’m old but groovy) but never liked knitting. For some reason knitting makes me want to scream. Will stick to my hooks!

Hi Kim, I follow your blog, but I don’t think I’ve left a comment before. Let’s see … my sister taught me to crochet when I was about 12, a long time ago. She taught me to chain and didn’t come back for several days. I think I chained the whole skein of yarn. I’m reading the Outlander books now. The last movie I saw was The King’s Speech and loved it. Thanks for the chance to win!

my dogs are lola and sammy – both rescue mutts. : ) i am firstly a knitter, and crochet seems harder just because it’s my second yarn-art, but i do love both.

Hi – I’m a new follower. I just restarted crocheting again after years away from it. Your new book looks really interesting and your Crochet Gifts books looks great too. I look forward to trying some of your patterns sometime. BTW Knit Purl Gurl sent me! Tina “The Book Lady” http://familyliteracyandyou.blogspot.com

Well this is awesome – I’ve always wanted to be that girl that doesn’t need to shell out big bucks for stuff because she can make something awesomer and more economical herself! <3

Hello, I enjoy keeping up with your blog and I am very interested in your Crochet Me book. My name is Laura and my stepmother, Darlene, attempted to teach me crochet when I was 7, but all I could do was chain. So she helped me make a rug for my room in which I used many chains to weave in between a crocheted framework she created. I wish I knew whatever happened to that rug, I was so proud when we finished it. I later taught myself how to do much more with crochet and I have recently gotten into the many sweet amigurami patterns out there. I just made a fat little hamster that I stuffed and now sits on a shelf in my living room. I hand-sewed little black beady eyes and a nose on it. I look forward to attempting crochet clothing!

I learned to crochet from a friend of my mothers. It was after my baby sister died when
I was 9. In the 1960s so the only available yarn in our very small town was Red Heart, I made lots of doll clothes. Crochet was something to help me heal and has continued to offer solace over the decades.

Family and friends always request crocheted cotton dishcloths and potholders. My current project is a a shawlette out of lace weight alpaca in a gorgeous gray blue. I don’t have a picture yet, had to do some serious frogging because of an early mistake.

We had homemade sushi last night for dinner

Karen

thanks Kim. for me crochet is meditative and has really helped during hard times

Oh, mystery meat…shudder!! I’ll leave that one alone, and let you know that my mom taught me to crochet! I love it, and I’d really love to win this book! It looks great!
Also, we had some amazing Thai food for supper last night. My hubby is an AMAZING cook.
(Popped over from KnitPurlGurl) =)

Yummmmm! Our “favorite” Thai place is 45-60 minutes away, so we don’t go often when we can try to make our own. It’s probably best for the wallet that it’s a bit farther away! ;-)

Hi Kim, this is another Kim in BC… My favourite thing that I’ve made is a zombie.

I’m sort of new to crochet. Well, not really… over the past twenty-odd years or so I’ve tried to teach myself to crochet, but it always ended in total frustration even though I did manage a wonky winter hat, some dishcloths and some little flowers. Recently, I got it. I got hooked! I’m really enjoying exploring this new world of yarn and stitches and patterns and resources. Since I’m so new, I don’t have a large repertoire of projects, but I am pretty proud of my aluminum crochet hook case. When I first saw the pattern I thought it was too advanced for my skill level. Phht! Here it is – http://ravel.me/Zaelia-Min/69gm4

Who taught me to crochet? Myself! I learned from videos online!

This has really been a great year for me. I was working in Lakeview (I’m a travel nurse). Trying to find some yarn. I stopped at the 2nd hand store, the lady said ‘If you take it all, you can have it for $7. I thought it’d be a couple skeins, but ended up filling my trunk. Recently I stopped to visit a lady, she gave me a bunch of hooks. Doing searches on line has landed me 1,000’s of patterns and ideas and lots of new techniques (I like the videos that I can crochet along with). I’ve been having ‘crochet teas’ to share the yarn, hooks and patterns. What fun.

My mother taught me to crochet many, many, many …need I go on?…years ago. I love it and I love to knit, too. Knit Purl Gurl sent me and I am happy that she did! Now I have another crochet outlet to enable my stash! Would love a copy of your book and tips.

Knit Purl Girl sent me over! Now following you on twitter! This is a great giveaway and I want to thank you for your books!

Kfantasmico7

I made 5 ruffle scarves in three days for christmas presents last year after a friend tried to help me learn crochet over the course of a weekend. Those were the first things I ever made and everyone who got one loved them! Nobody likes my gifts usually, lol. So now I’m (pardon the over used expression) hooked. I really love this giveaway and hope I win so people can get good crochet stuff from me in the future. And the cd would be a god send to give my poor friend a break. lol

KNITPURLGURL sent me! I have picked up my crochet hooks again and I LOVE it! I’m really hoping I’m lucky enough to win a copy of your signed book!

Thanks for the discussion, Kim. My beloved, late Grandmother Dessie taught me to crochet. She, like I, was a leftie. We saw her only once a year, and I cherish the memories of sitting in her cool living room on hot summer days, crocheting and talking about life.
