I’m going to have this coming weekend to myself, and I’m feeling a knitting bender brewing. Save for going to see Coraline on Saturday, my plan is to knit my heart out all weekend long. Laundry and socializing and cooking be damned!

I’ll need a serious amount of good television to keep me rooted to my seat, and so I tweeted:

tv-tweet

And within minutes, I had recommendations from people far and wide. Good god, I love Twitter. So, here is the prioritized list of shows people recommended (there was a lot of overlap and duplication, which was fabulous), according to my desire to see them, and leaving off ones I haven’t heard of or know I don’t want to watch, in the interest of keeping the list manageable:

  1. Freaks & Geeks
  2. Doctor Who
  3. ETA: Flight of the Conchords
  4. Veronica Mars
  5. The Office, UK version
  6. The Office, US version
  7. (Nobody recommended this; shocking! So I add it myself.) Deadwood
  8. ETA: 30 Rock
  9. Torchwood
  10. Dexter
  11. Twin Peaks (I’ve seen it, but it’s time for a refresher half my life later)
  12. Alias
  13. How I Met Your Mother
  14. Entourage
  15. Big Love
  16. Weeds

Suggested shows I’ve already watched, and what I think of them:

  1. Mad Men—Genius. And gorgeous. And smart.
  2. Arrested Development—Genius of a different sort. Hilarious.
  3. Gilmore Girls—Saw it all on broadcast television, not DVD. Crazy!
  4. Battlestar Galactica—Brilliant. I’m a huge fan. We’re all caught up, too, thanks to my father-in-law and his DVR. Only six episodes to go! Or is it seven?
  5. The Wire—We’ve seen seasons 1 and 2. They’re good. I can’t get past Dominic West’s appalling fake accent, and I don’t think it’s as brilliant as many very smart people do. We’ll likely watch more of it, but I’m in no rush.
  6. Six Feet Under—I watched this when Cecily and I were swatching for 200 pages of Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting. Fabulous show. Makes my hands hurt to think about it.
  7. The West Wing—Loved it. Watched most of it on that old-fashioned broadcast television. Could certainly go on a DVD bender, but not now. I want to live in the reality of an Obama administration for a while.
  8. Felicity—Judge at your leisure. I loved this show. Loved it. Watched it all as it aired, too. Was a fan of Noel. Certainly Noel.
  9. Wonderfalls—Lovely, awesome, it’s a tragedy it never aired. Go watch it on DVD.
  10. The collected works of Jane Austen in cinematic splendour: Loved the BBC’s Pride & Prejudice; have seen it twice in its entirety. Have seen many other Austen movies, including Becoming Jane.
  11. Northern Exposure—Watched most, if not all of it, when it aired. I’ll take Joel Fleischman over Jerry Seinfeld any day.

Thank you, to all who tweeted recommendations! I’ll let you know what I settle on for the great weekend knitting bender.

Oh, here's another shout-out for Veronica Mars. So. Well. Done. And it will be delicious to be able to watch the whole thing at once. I may have to re-watch it myself.

knitgrrl

I think I'm going to have to get on the Veronica Mars-wagon eventually… it just seems Whedony, and you know I love Whedony.

Kim Werker

Whedon loved it too. He even made a cameo in an episode of VM.

Flight of the Conchords – yes! I totally forgot that one. Re: Austen, if you haven't seen the most recent version of Sense and Sensibility (2 or 3 parter)… it is by far the best ever. (Confession: I watch P&P fully about twice a year, every year.) One more for you – not that you need more – Carnivale was fabulous, especially if you want to get lost in another era. I just rewatched S1 of Alias – good, light adventure fun. =) You're gonna have a good weekend.

ClaireLeah

For wicked fun – Dexter and Weeds are great (if you watch Weeds – take notice of the way the song is done differently (and by a different vocalist) for each episode. Ut oh – Now I can't can't tiny boxes out of my head!
I loved (and identified with) Freaks and Geeks when it came out – too bad it was so short-lived – and well – Twin Peaks – Good Pie :)
I could comment on every one of the recommendations – you have a great list there! Enjoy your weekend!

Maura

I was so sad that Veronica Mars got pulled… especially since they didn't finish the plot line of the last season.

Brianna

I can't believe no one recommended shows like Burn Notice, Psych, Heroes, Bones, Medium, Chuck… all great shows.

LittleWit

Another vote for Veronica Mars. When they took it off the air I stopped watching TV. Well TV other than House Hunters, Mythbusters and Top Gear

Amy J.

I just finished watching all of Veronica Mars–I LOVED it, I was sad when it ended. I was not a fan of Deadwood though (with all the swearing, you'd think I would have liked it more! ;), only got through a few episodes before I lost interest (the same thing happened with the Tudors). Just started Battlestar Galactica (I was a little hesitant with this one, don't know why really)–I liked what I've seen so far, which isn't much admittedly, just the miniseries that kicked it all off. Sounds like you have a nice weekend planned! Oh, and I'd watch the entire series of Alias all over again if I had the time–I loved that show (when and if you watch–there's a reason my kid's name is Sydney! ;))

Kim Werker

Burn Notice did come up; it fell into the category of “Haven't heard of it,
so filing it for later consideration.” I've seen most of Chuck, which of
course I love. Bones and Medium are okay, but I don't think I could go on a
spree without ending up with my own eyes poked out. Heroes S1 blew my mind,
but it got ridiculous after that and I've stopped even thinking about it.

Kim Werker

Stick with BSG. It's brilliant. I admit much of my excitement about Deadwood
is all everyone's told me about the foul, foul language. :)

I just did a crocheting binge to the first 11 episodes of Legend of the Seeker. Good if you like fantasy. In the past, I have gone on crocheting binges to Deep Space 9 and the first 3 seasons of LOST.

americafree.tv is a good website for when you want to watch something and there's nothing on TV (or someone is bogarting your tv).

1. Another vote for Veronica Mars, though after Freaks & Geeks and I was really disappointed in the third season. And YES, Shannon, it is very Whedony and you will like it.

2. I very much like How I Met Your Mother. It's surprising how much I do like it, but then what's not to love about a show with NPH, Willow, and Nick Andopolis (whom you will meet, in Freaks & Geeks)?

3. I am about to embark on a Spaced binge. I have a feeling I will love it. I will let you know.

kristi

I'm on a shockingly-long West Wing bender. And I don't watch much TV! Bravo started re-running it pre-election, and I delighted in the moments of intersection between TV and RL. I've seen and re-seen episodes, but still, when I wake pre-dawn, it's an episode of West Wing that gets me rolling out of bed. It gives me hope that government is really run by people who care! I've racked up 4 episodes on the TiVo currently, so I'm due for a bout of insomnia, or I'm about to lose something.

I also watch Project Runway and Good Eats. Feel free to dissect my personality based on these facts.

Amie

Deadwood was EXCELLENT, until the writers just stopped writing. They were supposed to do two final shows for the last “season” (if you can call it that) which were supposed to be 2 hours long each. And they never appeared. So the show just ends with no resolution. It is a great show, swearing and all.

Big Love: I say a HUGE, “EH.” Not worth watching at all. It gets old quick.

I'm surprised no one mentioned, “Lost.” That's a show that makes you think and keep track of what your watching. You can't miss a minute of you'll miss out on some connection. It's an A+ in my book.

myra

As much as I love #6, #5 is on my all time favorite tv shows I've ever seen list.
We got the whole thing including the special at the end and watched it over a few days.
So, So good.

pixie

I watched the entire season of entourage when I first came home with my baby and was often stuck in a chair with her not able to more because I would wake her. I love that show!!!

Lisa Naskrent

I must say I am addicted to House. And for action, 24. But with 24, I end up with my jaw down with no crocheting done. I do not watch much TV so cannot comment on the others as I have never seen or heard of a lot of them. My son got me hooked on House, and my brother on 24.

Deadwood is amazing. It's like modern Shakespeare.

If you like HBO-esque shows, Rome is great, too. It took me a couple eps to really get into, but it's incredible.

Recently I was REALLY low on money and debts were eating me from all sides! That was UNTIL I decided to make money.. on the internet! I went to surveymoneymaker dot net, and started filling in surveys for cash, and surely I’ve been far more able to pay my bills! I’m so glad, I did this!! – jyuo
