From Make & Meaning: We Were Here
This post was originally published on the now-retired Make & Meaning blog on February 26th, 2010. It’s not very topical now, five months after the Olympics, but I wanted to save this post in a public forum.) It’s hard for me to believe it’s been nearly a month since I wrote about the Olympics coming to Vancouver. In a way it feels like a lifetime ago, and in another way it feels like only a moment has passed. It turns out, in hindsight, that I lacked imagination when I wrote that post. I mean, I used a good amount of imagination when I sat down and...

This post was originally published on the now-retired Make & Meaning blog on January 30th, 2010. It’s not very topical now, five months after the Olympics, but I wanted to save this post in a public forum. (Also, heh, look how jaded I was before the Games! Look how I totally failed to anticipate the amazing community vibe!) I spent much of this week wanting to write about the Olympics. I’m not an athlete and I shudder at the thought of competing athletically (heck, I had to be taught to want to win a board game). I’m not really a sports fan and my main interest...

Okay, okay, the Olympics are over.* To prove to you I did stuff other than walk around town talking to strangers and screaming my head off about sports, behold: I made some stuff, too. And only some most of it is Games-related. First up, I embroidered. Yes I did. A friend of ours is due to have a baby in a month or so, and she asked her friends to contribute a quilt square. The theme: pirates. I used a pattern from SummerSweetStudio. Greg also made a square. He was far more ambitious in his rendering of a mariner’s compass. Pretty impressive from someone who swears he hates sewing,...
Read MoreThis is my home.
I’ve spent much of this afternoon trying to write about the Olympics – not in the I-was-there way I’ve been doing, but to sum up my emotional experience of the Games. I can’t do it. It’s too much. But I can sort of cobble some thoughts together. Vancouver is my home. It’s the home I chose for myself and it’s the place where I feel safe. Having felt very much not at home in many of the places I’ve lived since I was a kid, this is a very big deal for me. The first time I ever felt the feeling people call patriotism was when I sat in the stadium here...
Read MoreA Weekend in Whistler During the Olympics
We headed into the mountains last weekend to catch a couple of events at Whistler. The town of Whistler is designated a “resort municipality”, which means it’s a resort first and foremost. The centre of town is the Whistler Village, which is also where you catch the gondolas up the twin ski mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb. There are only around 10,000 residents of Whistler, but a couple million people visit each year, mostly for the skiing. First up: the men’s Super-G on a shockingly warm day. Wearing long underwear under my jeans, I ended up stripping to just a...
