“The Pitfalls of Sharing What I’ve Made with the World”

When I sent my last newsletter and asked people to write me a letter, I wasn’t entirely confident that anyone would. How amazing that I’ve already received four letters! It’s a very intimate exercise, to entrust me with these letters, with these thoughts and feelings. I don’t take the responsibility lightly. (If you don’t get my newsletter but want to know more, read it here, and please do write me a letter. Also, subscribe so you don’t miss exercises like this!) The first letter I opened is from Kirsten Moore, a fashion designer and maker from Portland,...

Attack of the Baby Dinosaur!

Posted by on Nov 2, 2011 in Crafts, Crochet, The Kid | 11 comments

When I sewed the last felt spot onto Owen’s hat on Monday, I kinda sorta burst into tears. I’d made my kid’s first Halloween costume, dude. I felt like a god. Granted, I had a lot of help. Help #1: The pattern for the hat, by Michele Wilcox for Coats & Clark. (It’s intended to be a dragon, but I left off the tail and anyway, he’s a dinosaur, okay?) The pattern is written in one size, for a toddler. My kid has a very, very big head. More crochet details on Ravelry. Help #2: My friend Samantha who was as excited for Owen’s first Halloween as I was. She...

Fall is the best season, especially in a handmade sweater.

The weather has been so gorgeous here the last couple of weeks, it’s all I can do to sit inside and work. It’s like a proper northeast autumn – blue skies, crisp air, turning leaves. And to top it off, I finished the first sweater I’ve made for Owen, and he wore it to the park yesterday. (The park was deserted in the middle of a gorgeous Sunday. What on earth were people doing?) I followed the Willie pattern by Pamela Wynne, sans intarsia wiener dog (best pattern name...

I finally made Owen some clothing. It was killing me not to have made him clothing. So now I won’t keel over! I blogged about the project over at CrochetMe.com, so I’ll just nudge you on over there. Shwin & Shwin’s 20-Minute Upcycled T-Shirt Scarf

Posted by on Mar 17, 2011 in Crafts | 3 comments

I discovered Shwin & Shwin’s quick tutorial for an upcycled t-shirt scarf a while back on Pinterest, and I finally tested it out on an old t-shirt this morning. The verdict: ACE. One old t-shirt, a pair of scissors and twenty minutes and I was done. It’s soft and comfy, and as an added bonus it’s of course machine washable. My entire wardrobe these days has to be machine washable, on account of how much it gets spit-up on. But I refuse to slide into frumpiness, so projects like these are key! Now I have to dig up more t-shirts I don’t wear...
