How to Crochet Bobbles in a Knitting Project

The pain of making knitted bobbles has gnawed at me for a long time, and I finally sat down and made a tutorial on how to crochet bobbles instead. Yup, crochet them in a knitting project. So fast and simple, people. The tutorial is over on The Holocene blog. I won’t lie – I hope it changes your life. 2012: A Round-up of Making

So, fine, it’s 2013 already. I had to debug a little WordPress to get images to work on the blog, and that took up almost all the time I had to blog over the last while. My excuses thus delivered, here’s a summing up of my last year in making, viewable as a slideshow if you’re so inclined (just click a thumbnail and proceed in the obvious way). Oh, but first, a look ahead. You’ll notice there’s some food in here. New Pattern: Sybil Cowl

So this happened yesterday. Sometimes you need to double up an already deliciously bulky yarn, dig out your gigantic 16mm hook, and make yourself or someone you love a wicked warm cowl. A Long-Ago Crochet Lecture

Posted by on Aug 17, 2012 in Crafts, Events | 0 comments

Back in January, 2011, the Vancouver Guild of Fibre Arts invited me to talk about crochet. It was six weeks after Owen arrived, and though I had the wherewithal to use my phone to record the lecture, I managed not to do anything with the recording until today. I was thinking about it because I’ll be speaking on similar themes at the Knit City kick-off party in October. Oh, you don’t know what Knit City is? I’ll tell you. Knit City will be Vancouver’s first proper yarn conference. There will be a spectacular market running the whole weekend of October 13-14th, and...

Land & Sea Baby Blanket Pattern

Land & Sea Baby Blanket Pattern

I posted lots of updates about the Land & Sea blanket as I made it, and now the pattern is ready so you, too, can make one! A simple feather-and-fan pattern is just as easy to crochet as a ripple, but has a bit more elegance to it. Two self-striping colourways interchange from one end of the blanket to another in Fibonacci stripes. Worked in fingering weight yarn, the result is a delicate baby blanket that’s not at all fussy. Adjust the size of the blanket easily, and work it in any yarn weight for varying effects. This is an appropriate pattern for beginners, and it’s a satisfying,...
