We’re making a new digital magazine. (Help!)
Remember back when the Taco Hat Indiegogo campaign failed and I said it was about the best thing ever? And I implied that I’d lighted on a better way to approach delivering outstanding content about building skills and know-how related to making stuff? Yeah, today I’m going to tell you all about it. The short story is that I’m falling over excited to be returning to my favourite kind of work – magazine editing. To boot, I’m part of a team that’s launching the magazine I’ll edit. And further, this magazine isn’t the kind of magazine we’ve...

Last night on the phone, my mom told me she felt bad that our Taco Hat TV Indiegogo campaign failed. I was all, “No, mom! Don’t feel bad.” And then I talked her ear off about how successful the campaign was even if we didn’t make our budget, and how I’m actually a little relieved it didn’t succeed as we’d initially laid it out. There are several reasons we didn’t stand a chance to raise $9,000 to make Taco Hat TV. A major one is that I had a helluva time approaching potential business sponsors. A big reason for this was that we didn’t have...

You know Mochimochi Land, yes? Anna Hrachovec makes the most relentlessly cute, extremely wee knitted creatures. She writes books about them, too. I had the pleasure of meeting her in person at Maker Faire New York a few weeks ago, and we ended up trading interviews. (You’ll see quotes from her in a magazine article I wrote when it comes out in a few months.) She asked me pretty much the best set of interview questions I’ve ever been asked, about creativity, creative business, Mighty Ugly, Taco Hat TV, crochet… I wish I hadn’t been so wiped from the continuing...

Though I’m generally disinclined to sell stuff, I’ve really been enjoying managing our Indiegogo campaign to make Taco Hat TV1. I’m surprised by this, to be honest. I thought I’d be really stressed out and uncomfortable, and although there are certainly things I might do differently were I to run a campaign like this again, I’ve felt nothing but stoked and energized. I suppose that’s because I really and truly and deeply believe in this project. It’s easy to badger ask people for their hard-earned cash when you’re certain you’ll be...

It’s a ridiculous name but a great idea. I’ve teamed up with filmmaker Ben Z Cooper to make a pilot season of a DIY web show for creative people and makers. Pretty much, it’s the DIY show I want to watch. It’s about skills, not projects. It’s about understanding how things work so we can make new stuff and fix or hack existing stuff. It’ll cost us about $9,000 to make the eight-episode pilot season here in Vancouver, and we’ve outlined the whole budget over on our Indiegogo page. It seems simultaneously like a ton of money and like not a lot of money....
