2010: A Year of Apps
This was an odd year for me. I started out with a job, left that job in February to go back to freelancing, and am ending the year doing the majority of my work in crochet-related projects, which was never my goal but which makes me happy all the same, despite my desire to do work in more general contexts. After spending most of 2009 trying very hard not to think about working in the crafts industry, I came back to it knowing this is most definitely the place for me (things that are obvious to others are often totally a surprise to me). And as I explored how I’d like to fit my work into...

When I went to sleep on Friday night I had 535 Facebook friends. Today I have 416. I know each of those 416 people. Some are close friends, some old classmates, some relatives, some acquaintances, many are crafters and colleagues. I do not know the 119 people I unceremoniously unfriended yesterday. I may have met a few of them briefly, but most I never met and likely never will. Why had I accepted their friend requests, then? It’s not because I had the goal of having as many Facebook friends as there are members of the United States Congress. Mostly it’s because, though I was very...

This post was originally published on the now-retired Make & Meaning blog on May 21st, 2010. I can’t think of any crafty projects I’ve taken on in the last few years that I didn’t document online in some way. I’d love to know what’s in your digital toolkit, too – let’s have a share-fest in the comments! First thing first: I take photos. I’ve recently misplaced (oh, the PAIN) my Nikon d40 digital SLR. My...

Paul over at the Make and Meaning group blog asked me to let the contributors know how to set up Twitterfeed to automatically tweet on their personal Twitter account when they write a new post on the blog, and I figured that since I already wrote it in an email I might as well post it here, too. Twitterfeed is a free service that automatically posts a tweet to your Twitter stream when an RSS feed of your choice is updated. I use it to auto-tweet when I write a new post on my blog or on Tumblr, and I recently set it up to post when I put up a new article on Make & Meaning. Using the...

Only the internet geekiest of you will make any sense out of that title, eh? I’ll sum up: I did a test recording on my iPhone today, transferred it to my computer, converted it to mp3 and uploaded it to Tumblr (all in a few minutes; peasy!). Which means I’ll be able to do that during the TV taping. So. W00t. For your listening pleasure, here’s that recording.
