Embracing the Ugly Side of Business: Video

Back at Hello Etsy in Portland over a year ago, I was pretty stoked to see that all the workshops were being recorded. Editing those videos and correcting for challenging sound conditions led to most of the videos not being released, but I was asked a question last week that led me to poke one of the conference organizers to see if there was a video of my session kicking around. And there was (thanks, Isaac)! So if you have a spare 45 minutes and want to feel like I’m sitting right next to you, talking a lot in your ear, take a look. In fact, there’s not much to actually see, so...

Hello Etsy and Deep Economy

I can’t wait to leave for Portland tomorrow for that city’s instalment of the Hello Etsy conference. The main conference is in Berlin this weekend, and several American cities are hosting their own creative small-business conference at the same time. I was very excited and flattered to have been invited to pitch a session for the Portland event, and even more so to have that pitch accepted. If you’re attending the Portland conference, I hope to see you in my session! We’ll be talking about the ugly side of business. Where “ugly” is totally subjective, as...

New Tutorial on CRAFT: Need a Push to Make Something Ugly?

Posted by on Aug 17, 2011 in Business, Crafts, Events, Highlight, Mighty Ugly | 0 comments

I’m really psyched to have had the opportunity to write a bit of a guide to making a Mighty Ugly creature for the CRAFT blog. I mean, it’s CRAFT! And I got to sit for an afternoon and make and photograph an ugly creature! Fun times. So if you’ve been listening to me blather about ugly for a year but have felt timid about giving the challenge a shot, perhaps that post will help you out. At the very least, I hope it helps explain the concept of the project. And kicks, like, every crafter to make something ugly on purpose. — In other news, I’m beside myself with...

Mighty Ugly in Portland for Today’s Etsy Craft Party!

Posted by on Jun 10, 2011 in Mighty Ugly, Videoblog | 0 comments

Have I mentioned that I’m getting back into Mighty Ugly? Since I’m back to, you know, fairly full cognitive functioning now that Owen’s almost six months old, I’m back to thinking a lot more about my favourite project. Something that excites me very much is that Mighty Ugly will be at one of Portland’s Etsy Craft Parties later today. I won’t be there, but the fabulous Rachel of Bike Cozy will be facilitating the workshops at the Museum of Contemporary Craft from 4-6pm. She asked me to make a little video introducing the project, and here it is for your...

That Summit Really Was Awesome

Posted by on Jun 25, 2010 in Business, Crafts | 4 comments

All I really want to say is that I hope the people at Hello Craft invite me to next year’s Summit of Awesome. Because the one last week was fantastic. I’ve got my work mojo back. And there are lots of ideas I want to tell you about. But for now, I’m just going to sum up the conference, and the extra day I spent in Portland, in photos. (I’ve written about my Mighty Ugly experiences over on the MU blog.) I’m very grateful to have attended and hopefully to have contributed a little to the greatness of the Summit of Awesome. I had fun, I made stuff, I...
